Humble Yourself - Our Faith is the Measure God Uses
Romans 12:3
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
Matthew 9:29
Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.
Many people tend to think highly of themselves, prideful, puffed up in their self-image, or what they claim to have or know. This characteristic unfortunately infects many Christians, both in and out of the Church. This leads to the above passage in the KJV Bible
Two important points are made by Paul the Apostle in this passage after he speaks first to qualify himself as speaking for God, "through the grace given unto me..." This qualification is accompanied by his assigned spiritual duties as an apostle of God's one Church. Paul makes the first point that any faithful Christian is not to think highly of himself, meaning not to be prideful, haughty, pompous, full of himself, puffed up in pride and ideas and so forth.
The next point is the manner in which God interacts with us. God deals every man the measure of faith, to mean God interacts with man in a faithful manner and the degree or amount of faith given by God in accordance to the faith that man has.
The second passage confirms that God gives in accordance to our faith, therefore a person of little faith will get little, a person of much faith will get much, for it is the manner and degree of faith that determines how God will deal with that person
This brings us back to the first point of the first passage above. A person of little faith, but of much pride in himself, puffed up in his idea of Christianity, will find God dealing little with him because such a person has little or no faith. Hence Paul said, "...not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but think soberly."
The lesson therefore, is to ensure you think soberly of yourself, humble yourself and never act pridefully or puffed up. Your faith depends on it.
